Pediatric Therapy at Root Pediatrics in Bozeman

Childhood is when the brain and body do their most important work — and structured therapy at the right time can change a child’s trajectory. Root Pediatrics is a dedicated pediatric program offering physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy under one roof, with multi-disciplinary collaboration for children with complex or multi-system needs.

We see children from birth to 18 — infants on feeding and motor milestones, toddlers building first words and walking, preschoolers preparing for school, school-age kids working on motor coordination and academic participation, and teens managing chronic conditions or injury recovery. When a patient turns 18 and still needs care, they transition seamlessly to our adult team rather than starting over somewhere new.

What Counts as a Developmental Delay — and When Should You Have Your Child Evaluated?

A developmental delay means a child is reaching milestones — moving, talking, eating, playing, or regulating — later than expected for their age. One late milestone isn’t necessarily cause for concern. A pattern across months, a skill that disappears, or a sense that something is off is worth an evaluation. Root does not diagnose; we evaluate, support, and coordinate with your pediatrician.

Start with the area that concerns you most: movement and motor skills, speech and language, feeding, or sensory processing — and if it spans more than one, that is exactly what a multidisciplinary evaluation is for.

Who We Treat

  • Developmental delays — across motor, language, cognitive, and social domains.
  • Cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions — including TBI, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, genetic syndromes.
  • Down syndrome — early gross motor support, hypotonia management, orthopedic surveillance.
  • Autism spectrum disorder — neurodiversity-informed motor, sensory, communication, and feeding support.
  • ADHD and executive function challenges — strategies for attention, planning, organization, and self-regulation.
  • Sensory processing differences — sensory integration intervention and home/school strategies.
  • Torticollis and plagiocephaly — early intervention for infant head and neck asymmetry.
  • Toe walking — orthopedic, neurological, or sensory-driven gait patterns.
  • Coordination difficulties (DCD) — improving motor planning and skill acquisition.
  • Speech and language delays — articulation, language, social communication, fluency.
  • Feeding difficulties — picky eating, sensory aversions, oral motor delays, infant feeding.
  • Childhood orthopedic and sports injuries — rehab tailored to growing bones and developing motor patterns.

What Therapy Looks Like at Root Pediatrics

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — developmental history, standardized assessment, observation in play, a parent interview, and a goals discussion.
  2. Functional, family-driven goals — concrete targets tied to what matters in your child’s life.
  3. Play-based 1-on-1 sessions — engaging, child-led, and individually delivered.
  4. Multi-disciplinary co-treatment when needed — PT, OT, and speech together for complex cases.
  5. Parent coaching at every visit — strategies you use during meals, baths, drives, and play.
  6. School and medical coordination — IEP/504 alignment, pediatrician communication, specialty team updates.
  7. Re-assessment every 12 weeks with goals updated as your child progresses.

Early Intervention (Birth to 3)

For children under 3, Montana’s Early Intervention program offers free developmental evaluation and support, provided locally through Family Outreach. If you have concerns about your baby or toddler’s development, it’s worth reaching out — early support during these first years tends to go especially far. Clinic-based therapy at Root works right alongside Early Intervention, adding longer 1-on-1 sessions focused on your child’s specific goals, and we’re glad to help you connect with Family Outreach and coordinate care.

The staff are friendly, easy to talk to and helpful. Kezia explained to me how scar tissue from surgery can keep the muscles in a tight position. Even with physical therapy the muscles will revert back to the tight position even while keeping up with physical therapy exercises. This is new to me and I can feel everything loosening up. I'm excited to see how much this can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can my child start therapy?
Birth to 18. We work with infants on feeding, torticollis, and early motor support, with toddlers and preschoolers on developmental milestones, with school-age kids on motor, language, and executive function, and with teens on injury rehab and complex condition management. At 18, patients who still need care transition seamlessly to Root’s adult team — no discharge to a new clinic.
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
Common signs include missed developmental milestones (sitting, walking, talking, self-feeding), regression of previously acquired skills, persistent difficulty with motor tasks, speech that’s hard to understand, severe picky eating, sensory dysregulation, social communication challenges, or a diagnosed condition (CP, autism, Down syndrome, genetic syndrome) needing therapy support. Trust your instincts — if you wonder whether evaluation is warranted, it usually is.
What does a pediatric therapy session look like?
Engaging, child-led, and play-based. Sessions use obstacle courses, swings, climbing structures, sensory bins, games, and creative activities to target specific therapy goals. Children stay motivated and often don’t realize they’re “working.”
What's the difference between PT, OT, and speech therapy for kids?
Pediatric PT focuses on gross motor skills — sitting, walking, running, balance, strength. Pediatric OT focuses on fine motor, sensory processing, self-care, hand skills, and play participation. Speech therapy addresses speech sounds, language, social communication, and feeding. Many children benefit from more than one — and at Root, the teams coordinate seamlessly.
Do you work with schools?
Yes. We attend IEP and 504 meetings when invited, share progress reports with school therapists, and align our goals with classroom and PE expectations so progress carries over to school.
How long will my child need therapy?
It depends on the condition and severity — some children work toward a short, focused set of goals, while others (cerebral palsy, autism, complex disability) benefit from ongoing therapy across childhood with intensity changing over time. We set measurable goals, re-assess every 12 weeks, and discharge when goals are met.
Does Montana Medicaid cover pediatric therapy?
Yes. Montana Medicaid covers pediatric PT, OT, and speech therapy when medically necessary. We also accept most major commercial health insurance plans in Montana. We verify your specific benefits before the first visit.
Do I need a referral for pediatric therapy in Montana?
Montana law doesn’t require one to schedule an evaluation, but for kids, we generally prefer a referral from your child’s pediatrician so we can coordinate directly with their medical team — it makes for better, more connected care. Most plans — especially Medicaid and managed care — also require a physician referral for ongoing coverage, and we’re glad to help you get one if you don’t already have it.
My child is under 3. Should I also look into Early Intervention?
Yes — it’s worth doing both. In Montana, birth-to-3 Early Intervention services are provided through Family Outreach, a local nonprofit; they can evaluate your child at no cost and coordinate developmental support. Clinic-based therapy at Root works alongside Early Intervention, adding longer 1-on-1 sessions focused on your child’s specific therapy goals. We’re glad to help you connect with Family Outreach and coordinate care.
Why choose clinic-based therapy over school therapy or Early Intervention?
They serve different purposes. Early Intervention (birth to 3, through Family Outreach) and school-based therapy target participation — the support a child needs in their setting. Clinic-based therapy targets functional, medical, and developmental goals more broadly with longer 1-on-1 sessions. Many children benefit from both working together.
