Somatic Experiencing in Bozeman: Body-Centered Trauma Resolution

When stress, trauma, or chronic activation has become wired into the nervous system, talk and cognitive approaches often hit a ceiling. Somatic Experiencing (SE) at Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman works at a different level — directly with the body’s physiology — to release stored survival energy and restore nervous-system regulation.

SE was developed by Dr. Peter Levine and is grounded in current neuroscience of trauma, the polyvagal theory, and autonomic stress physiology. At Root, it’s delivered by Kezia Peterson, OT, MOTR/L — an occupational therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner candidate, and the practice’s founder.

What Is Somatic Experiencing?

Trauma and chronic stress disrupt the autonomic nervous system’s ability to self-regulate. Survival responses (fight, flight, freeze) that don’t get to complete during the original event become “stuck” in the body — showing up as chronic tension, hypervigilance, dissociation, fatigue, or persistent pain even when imaging is clear.

SE works by:

  • Titrating activation — engaging traumatic material in small, manageable doses rather than overwhelming the nervous system.
  • Pendulating between activation and regulation to build nervous-system resilience.
  • Resourcing through positive bodily sensations to stabilize during processing.
  • Tracking sensation to allow incomplete survival responses to gently complete.
  • Orienting to the present moment through sensory cues.

You don’t have to verbally relive events for it to work. The mechanism is physiological.

Conditions SE Helps Most

  • PTSD and complex trauma — including childhood, developmental, and relational trauma.
  • Single-incident trauma — motor vehicle accidents, falls, surgical or medical trauma, assault.
  • Chronic stress and burnout — caregivers, first responders, healthcare workers, parents.
  • Anxiety and panic — particularly when somatic symptoms (tightness, palpitations, dizziness) drive the anxiety.
  • Unexplained chronic pain — pain persisting after appropriate medical workup.
  • Post-concussion emotional symptoms — persistent anxiety, irritability, or mood changes after head injury.
  • Long COVID — autonomic dysregulation and post-viral nervous-system symptoms.

What Makes Root’s SE Program Different

  • SEP candidate — formally trained in Somatic Experiencing, with advanced touch-based training.
  • Integrated with occupational therapy — SE combined with hand rehab, ergonomics, craniosacral therapy, and visceral manipulation as appropriate.
  • PT + OT collaboration for clients with concurrent chronic pain, post-concussion, or post-surgical recovery.
  • Trauma-informed throughout the clinic — the entire Root team practices trauma-informed care principles.
  • No verbal reliving required — SE works through the body, not narrative.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Initial conversation about your history, current symptoms, goals, and any existing care team.
  2. Resourcing — establishing internal and external supports before any processing.
  3. Slow, titrated work with bodily sensations — never pushed past your window of tolerance.
  4. Integration time at the end of each session.
  5. Ongoing pacing — we move only as fast as your nervous system can metabolize.

Sessions are 60 minutes, full 1-on-1, in a calm and supportive environment.

These aren’t competing — many clients benefit from a combination. SE is especially useful when somatic symptoms or nervous-system dysregulation are prominent.

Take the First Step

Trauma resolution doesn’t require retelling everything that happened. Request an evaluation today — most clients are scheduled within the same week.

Core Techniques We Use

Titration

Working with traumatic activation in small, manageable doses to prevent overwhelm and allow integration.

Pendulation

Shifting attention between activation and regulation to build nervous-system resilience.

Resourcing

Anchoring you in positive bodily sensations — warmth, safety, support — to stabilize before and during processing.

Orienting

Sensory cues (sight, sound, touch) used to ground you in the present moment.

Tracking

Observing bodily sensations without judgment to identify and gently release stored survival responses.

5.0 out of 5
I have been to many physical therapists for various injuries and this clinic is the absolute best. I feel like for the first time we are creating a plan to rehabilitate my injury but also figuring out how to avoid injuries in the future. Tracey, Kristi and Lindsey have shown me exercises I will do for life. I am so happy I chose Root. They offer Pilates and Yoga classes that are small, run by highly trained physical therapists and customized to your level of fitness. I have especially enjoyed the new Pilates class for hyper mobile folks in their beautiful new exercise studio with Lindsey. I have noticed serious improvement in only the first month. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-centered approach to resolving trauma and chronic stress, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It works with the nervous system’s physiological responses — muscle tension, breathing patterns, autonomic activation — to release stored survival energy. SE is consistent with current neuroscience on the autonomic nervous system, the polyvagal theory, and trauma physiology.
Do I need a PTSD or trauma diagnosis to benefit?
No. SE helps with a wide range of presentations — major trauma, single-incident events (car accidents, falls, surgery), chronic stress, anxiety, burnout, unexplained physical symptoms, and persistent post-concussion or long-COVID symptoms. You don’t need a formal diagnosis.
What happens in a session?
Sessions involve guided attention to bodily sensations while your practitioner helps you safely process activation. There’s no requirement to verbally relive traumatic events. The work happens through the nervous system rather than through narrative, which is why SE is often well-tolerated by people for whom talk therapy has been overwhelming or ineffective.
How is SE different from talk therapy?
Talk therapy works primarily through cognitive processing of events. SE works through the body’s physiological responses. They aren’t competing — many clients use both — but SE doesn’t require you to verbally retell or relive trauma for it to be effective. The mechanism is different.
How is SE different from EMDR?
Both are body-aware, evidence-supported trauma approaches. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, tones) to process traumatic memories. SE works directly with autonomic activation and the body’s incomplete survival responses. Some clients respond better to one or the other; some benefit from both.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies widely. Some clients notice meaningful shifts early on; others benefit from longer treatment, especially with complex or developmental trauma. We discuss expected timelines openly at your evaluation and re-assess as we go.
Is SE safe if I have severe trauma history?
SE was specifically designed to be titrated — meaning it works with activation in small, manageable doses to prevent overwhelm. That makes it generally well-suited for severe trauma, though pacing and external supports (psychiatrist, therapist, medical team) matter. We coordinate with your existing care team when relevant.
Is Somatic Experiencing covered by insurance?
When integrated into an occupational therapy plan of care for a qualifying medical condition (chronic pain, post-concussion, post-surgical recovery, functional symptoms), SE is typically covered by major Montana plans. Pure wellness work without a qualifying medical diagnosis is offered on a self-pay basis. We discuss this transparently before your first visit.
Do I need a referral for SE in Montana?
No referral is needed for cash-pay SE — it’s a private-pay wellness service, so you can schedule directly. When SE is billed through occupational therapy insurance coverage instead, some plans require a physician referral for reimbursement; we confirm at your benefits check.
