Pain That Persists Isn't a Moral Failing

If you've tried everything and pain still runs your life, the problem isn't you. Most chronic pain has several drivers — and most treatment only addresses one. Whole-person, body-centered care often changes what nothing else has.

Pain that lasts beyond the expected healing time (usually over 3 months) Pain that spreads or moves beyond the original injury Extra sensitivity to touch, pressure, temperature, or movement Poor sleep, fatigue, and doing less than you used to Mood changes — anxiety, low mood, frustration Fear of moving, and pulling back from activities Imaging that doesn't fully explain how much it hurts

Why Chronic Pain Persists

When pain lingers long after the original injury should have healed, deeper, system-level patterns keep the signals flowing.

An Over-Sensitive Nervous System

The nervous system can get stuck on high alert, turning up pain signals beyond what the tissues warrant.

Avoiding Movement & Losing Fitness

Fear of pain leads to doing less, which lowers tolerance and feeds the cycle.

A Physical Driver That Was Missed

Often there's still a joint or movement problem that symptom-only treatment never addressed.

Stress & the Body's Alarm System

Past trauma, ongoing stress, and a keyed-up nervous system can hold the body in a protective state.

Sleep & Pacing

Poor sleep and push-too-hard-then-crash patterns both reinforce pain.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than the expected healing time — usually more than three months. It's driven by a mix of things — the tissues, how you move, the nervous system, stress, and sleep. Often the nervous system has become extra-sensitive and turns up pain signals beyond what the tissues call for. The good news is that all of those pieces respond to care.

Whole-Person Chronic Pain Care in Bozeman — When Nothing Else Has Worked

Chronic pain is one of the most common, most under-treated, and most demoralizing problems in healthcare. Most chronic pain has several drivers at once — the tissues, how you move, the nervous system, stress, and sleep — and most treatment addresses only one of them. That’s a big reason it doesn’t get better.

At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, we treat all of those pieces under one plan: hands-on manual therapy, graded movement, calm nervous-system-aware care — including gentle approaches like visceral manipulation when deeper-held tension is part of the picture — plain-language pain education, and pacing — all in full 1-on-1 sessions, built around what chronic pain actually is.

Why Chronic Pain Becomes Chronic

When pain sticks around past the expected healing time, it’s usually because:

  • The nervous system has become extra-sensitive and turns up pain signals.
  • Avoiding movement and losing fitness lower your tolerance and feed the cycle.
  • A physical driver is still there but was never addressed.
  • Stress or a keyed-up nervous system holds the body in a protective state.
  • Sleep and pacing quietly reinforce the pain.
  • Single-piece care treats one part and leaves the rest.

What’s Different About Care at Root

We use a whole-person approach that matches how chronic pain actually works:

  • Manual therapy for the tissue and joint drivers that are still there.
  • Graded movement to rebuild tolerance without flares.
  • Nervous-system-aware care for the stress and alarm side of persistent pain.
  • Understanding your pain, woven through in plain language.
  • Pacing and flare management so you can do more and recover faster.
  • Coordination with your physician, pain management, and mental-health providers.

What to Expect

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — your full history, a whole-picture look at what’s contributing, and an honest conversation about it.

  3. Hands-on, whole-person treatment every visit.
  4. Pacing and self-management coaching along the way.

I have had an incredible experience at Roots. The woman at the front desk is so helpful and kind. My PT Kristi had helped me rehab my knee and hip so that I can take my dog on hikes again and climb my stairs without pain. I feel heard and seen at my appointments. My time in the office is incredibly helpful. My home exercises are simple but very effective so I actually do them. I also work with Lindsey who is a PT assistant and she has helped my knee with cupping and other manual work. Lindsey has helped me build my strength, balance, and I’m stating to work on endurance/ cardio. I feel like I’m in safe and thoughtful hands at Roots- highly recommend!!!

I have been to many physical therapists for various injuries and this clinic is the absolute best. I feel like for the first time we are creating a plan to rehabilitate my injury but also figuring out how to avoid injuries in the future. Tracey, Kristi and Lindsey have shown me exercises I will do for life. I am so happy I chose Root. They offer Pilates and Yoga classes that are small, run by highly trained physical therapists and customized to your level of fitness. I have especially enjoyed the new Pilates class for hyper mobile folks in their beautiful new exercise studio with Lindsey. I have noticed serious improvement in only the first month. Highly recommend!

The staff are friendly, easy to talk to and helpful. Kezia explained to me how scar tissue from surgery can keep the muscles in a tight position. Even with physical therapy the muscles will revert back to the tight position even while keeping up with physical therapy exercises. This is new to me and I can feel everything loosening up. I'm excited to see how much this can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chronic pain "all in my head"?
No — and that framing is harmful. Chronic pain is a real, biological thing that involves changes in the nervous system, ongoing tissue issues, and often stress and sleep. The pain is genuinely there. Treatment just has to address all the pieces, not only the tissue.
Why hasn't anything else worked?
Most chronic pain treatment focuses on one piece — usually the tissue. Chronic pain rarely has just one cause. When manual therapy alone, exercise alone, medication alone, or even surgery alone doesn’t resolve it, the answer is usually whole-person care that addresses several things together.
How does understanding my pain help?
When you understand what’s driving persistent pain, you tend to fear movement less, manage it better, and get better results. We work this into your care through plain conversation, not a lecture.
Can therapy help if stress or past trauma are part of my pain?
Yes — when stress, past trauma, or a nervous system stuck on high alert are part of the picture, calm, body-centered care can help settle it. It works with the nervous system rather than asking you to relive anything. We fold it into your PT and OT, and offer it on its own too — see our Somatic Experiencing page.
How long does chronic pain treatment take?
Many people notice meaningful change with consistent care, with continued gains after that. Chronic pain rarely clears in a handful of visits — but for many people it becomes more manageable, less frequent, and less limiting with whole-person care.
Will I always have flare-ups?
Most people do, especially under stress, illness, or overload. The goal isn’t to never flare — it’s to flare less often, less intensely, and to know how to recover quickly. We teach pacing, flare plans, and the self-management skills that make that possible.
Can you work with my pain management physician or therapist?
Yes. We routinely coordinate with primary care, pain management, and mental-health providers. Care that works across professions produces better results for chronic pain than any single one alone.
Will exercise hurt or help me?
Done right, movement is one of the strongest, best-proven treatments for chronic pain. Done wrong, it can flare you. We build up your activity gradually so you gain tolerance without setting off symptoms — the dose matters as much as the activity.
Do I need a referral for chronic pain PT in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state. Some insurance plans require a physician referral for coverage; we verify at your benefits check.
