Whiplash Is More Than a Sore Neck

Untreated whiplash commonly becomes long-lasting — neck pain, dizziness, headaches, and fog that linger for months. Early, whole-picture care heads that off.

Neck pain and stiffness, often worse 24–72 hours after the event Headaches at the base of the skull or temples Dizziness or balance changes Trouble turning your head, especially when driving Pain, numbness, or tingling into the arm Brain fog, poor concentration, or fatigue Poor sleep and irritability

Why Whiplash Becomes Long-Lasting Without Care

When symptoms linger long after an injury should have healed, deeper dysfunctions keep discomfort signals flowing.

Car Accidents

Rear-end and side-impact crashes are the most common cause of whiplash, even at low speeds.

Sports & Activity Impacts

Ski crashes, mountain-bike falls, and hard hits in contact sports all produce whiplash.

Falls

A slip-and-fall can produce the same neck injury as a crash.

Concussion & Dizziness Alongside It

A lot of whiplash comes with some concussion or balance symptoms too — so the exam needs to check all of it.

Whiplash is a strain of the neck's joints and soft tissue from the head being whipped rapidly back and forth — most often in a car accident, but also from sports impacts and falls. It often involves the neck joints, muscles, nerves, your balance system, and concussion symptoms all at once.

Whole-Picture Whiplash Care in Bozeman

Whiplash is rarely just a neck issue. The same rapid whip of the head that strains your neck joints and muscles often affects your balance, produces concussion symptoms, and disrupts your sleep and energy. Treatment that addresses only the neck often leaves the dizziness, headaches, and fog unresolved — which is one of the main reasons whiplash becomes long-lasting.

At Root Therapy and Wellness in Bozeman, whiplash care looks at the whole picture — the neck, balance, and concussion symptoms — in full 1-on-1 sessions with hands-on care every visit.

How Whiplash Happens

Whiplash happens when the head and neck are quickly whipped through an arc — most often from a rear-end car crash, but also from sports impacts (skiing, mountain biking, contact sports) and falls. That force can affect:

  • The neck joints and muscles — strained and guarded
  • The nerves in the neck — causing arm symptoms
  • Your balance system — dizziness and unsteadiness
  • The brain — a concussion, even without hitting your head
  • Your sleep and energy — poor sleep, fatigue, and irritability

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Comprehensive evaluation (60 minutes) — your history, a neck exam, a balance check, a concussion screen, and a nerve screen.
  2. Diagnosis — which systems are involved and the right order to address them.
  3. Hands-on treatment that same visit — neck mobilization, soft-tissue work, and balance care if needed.
  4. Home program — a short daily routine.
  5. Re-assessment every few visits, adjusting as you respond.

I saw my primary care doctor for back and leg pain. She recommended I get physical therapy. I contacted Root Therapy and wellness. I was able to get an appointment in the next week. They did an evaluation and discussed a treatment plan. My providers were Kristi, PT, and Lindsey, PTA, they both were very respectful, explained every step and made sure I understood. Thanks to them I'm now pain free. I recommend them without reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I start PT after a whiplash injury?
As soon as you’re medically cleared — ideally within the first week or two. Early, structured care lowers the chance of whiplash becoming a long-lasting problem. If imaging is being done first or you’re under medical care, we coordinate the timing with your physician.
Why does whiplash get worse before it gets better?
The strain and inflammation often peak 24–72 hours after the event, even when the moments right after felt manageable. That’s normal and doesn’t mean the injury is getting worse — but it’s a sign to get evaluated rather than wait it out.
I just had a low-speed accident. Do I really need PT?
Often yes. Whiplash can happen even at low speeds, and low-speed cases that go untreated more often become long-lasting. A brief evaluation can tell whether structured care is worth it.
How long does whiplash treatment take?
Simpler whiplash often settles over weeks to months. Cases involving dizziness or concussion take longer and need those systems assessed too. Even long-standing whiplash responds well to structured rehab, so a delayed start is not a lost cause — and early care lowers the chance of symptoms persisting.
Can whiplash cause concussion-like symptoms?
Yes — the forces of a whiplash can cause a concussion even without hitting your head. We screen for concussion at the evaluation and fold in concussion care when needed. See our Concussion Rehabilitation page.
Do you handle auto insurance claims?
Yes. We work routinely with auto insurance and personal injury attorneys for crash-related whiplash. We handle the documentation and billing — you focus on recovery.
Does workers' comp cover whiplash from a workplace incident?
Yes, for whiplash that happened on the job. We coordinate with your employer and workers’ comp case manager throughout.
What if my whiplash symptoms have lasted months or years?
Long-standing whiplash still responds well to whole-picture rehab, even years later. Lingering neck pain, dizziness, headache, and fog usually involve treatable neck and balance issues — don’t assume it’s permanent.
Do I need a referral for whiplash PT in Montana?
No — Montana is a direct-access state. For auto insurance and workers’ comp claims, the insurer may require physician documentation; we help coordinate.
